Surfing was once considered an underground sport that was not particularly
competitive in nature, but the last two decades have seen that all
change. Names like Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton have become
mainstream, and people around the world have become familiar with the best
beaches for finding the biggest and best waves.
Surfboards and accessories are
widely available at local surf shops near popular surfing destinations.
Surfboards were once very long and very heavy, with many boards longer than 12 feet. This made maneuvering on the waves incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Board tricks in those days were more apt to be related to fancy footwork or gymnastic poses, rather than actual face or air tricks. Today's boards have evolved a great deal from the heavy wooden boards of the Fifties and Sixties. They are made of composites that are much more lightweight. This makes them much easier to handle on the wave face. New shapes and designs have also increased their maneuverability, permitting extraordinarily tight turns and impressive aerial tricks. In addition to a surfboard, surfers need board wax. Board wax is used on the top of the board to increase traction while surfing, making it easier to keep your footing when maneuvering. A board rack is another investment a surfer might consider if he can't fit his board inside his vehicle.
